Why You Need Microdermabrasion

Have you heard about microdermabrasion and ever wondered exactly what it is?  Have you ever wondered if microdermabrasion is right for you?  Seven Stones Healing Massage and Spa offers microdermabrasion by a licensed esthetician and is here to give you the facts about microdermabrasion treatments.

What is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a treatment that uses either crystal beads or diamond tipped abrasion to exfoliate and remove the old top layer of skin.  It removes the top layer of skin cells to reveal softer, newer skin cells.  Skin cells are removed via gentle suction from the microdermabrasion machine.

Crystal vs Diamond Tip
There are two types of microdermabrasion facials.  Older machines use crystals that are dispensed from the microdermabrasion tip.  This type of microdermabrasion is similar to a gentle sandblasting.  Suction is used to remove excess crystals and skin cells.   However, this type of microdermabrasion often leaves crystal residue behind that if not properly removed can lead to clogged pores.

At Seven Stones Healing Massage and Spa we use diamond tipped microdermabrasion.  Diamonded tipped microdermabrasion uses a microdermabrasion wand that has diamond tipped attachment.  Diamonds are the hardest substance on Earth.  The diamond tipped attachment gently exfoliates by sanding away old and dead skin cells.  Suction is used to remove the skin cells that are knocked off during the procedure.  No residue is left behind unlike with crystal microdermabrasion.  This leaves your skin feeling smooth and not gritty after the treatment.

What are common microdermabrasion treatments?
Microdermabrasion is a great treatment for anti-aging and blackheads.  The American Academy of Dermatology recommends microdermabrasion for dull complextion, age spots, uneven skin tone or texture, and dark spots that can appear when acne starts to clear.

For anti-aging, microdermabrasion resurfaces skin to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles.  Age spots are diminished as the top layer of skins is removed.

When used as an acme treatment, microdermabrasion loosens blackheads and cleans pores with exfoliation and suction.

What happens after your treatment?
You will notice that your skin may feel tender and dry after a treatment.  This feeling will go away within a day or two.  You will want to limit sun exposure during this time.  A hydrating masque is recommended after the treatment is often included with Seven Stones Healing Massage and Spa’s microdermabrasion treatment.  A customized peel can also be added as an anti-aging treatment to help deeper penetrate and exfoliate the skin.  This leaves you with brighter skin tone.  More than one session may be required to reach your desired skincare results.  You should discuss these goals with your esthetician.
